Learning the 46 basic hiragana in a week is perfectly realistic, as long as you work in small groups and review actively. Here is a day-by-day plan.
🗓️ The schedule
| Day | To learn | New kana |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | General review of all 46 | 0 |
| 7 | Quiz and reading simple words | 0 |
🧠 The method that works
- Learn in blocks of 5. The brain remembers small groups far better than long lists.
- Use spaced repetition. Review yesterday's kana before adding new ones.
- Write by hand. Tracing each character anchors memory much more than reading alone.
- Test yourself actively. Forcing yourself to recall the answer beats passive rereading.
⚠️ Common pitfalls
Some kana look alike: Spot them early and compare them side by side so you never mix them up.
🎯 Put it into practice
After each day, run a short quiz on Kanakana by selecting only the rows you have learned. On day seven, you will read your first words: the best reward of all.
